Extended Reality as an educational tool

Enrich your teaching with Extended Reality technology. Use immersive technology and EdTech to provide students with additional learning opportunities or create real-life simulations of conditions students will encounter in the workforce.

At the Tech Lab (NU 1A-25) of the University Library, you'll find unique opportunities to enrich your teaching with experimental technologies. Extended Reality offers several possibilities:

Make use of XR equipment
The Tech Lab owns various XR headsets, such as the HTC VIVE cosmos and the Oculus quest II, that are available to use for educational purposes. The University Library ensures proper maintenance of the headsets, offers you technical support during educational projects, and provides instructions on how to use the technology.

Benefit from logistical and organisational support
The Support Centre assists in creating seminars or workshops to allow for an easy registration process through LibCal. In addition, you'll receive guidance during the preparation phase, as well as support with practical and technical matters.

Learn about the possibilities applications offer
Find out what applications are available, how these applications can be integrated in educational projects and what you need to consider when designing a program.

Are you interested in having a XR application developed? Get in touch with the VR@VU community at the Network Institute.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can the support centre assist in developing an application?

For the development of applications, especially research applications, please contact Marco Otte of the VR@VU Network. Team educational support can only help you implement an already existing application in your education and provide the facilities and support for and during educational sessions.

  • I already own a XR headset. Can I still use the Tech Lab?

Of course! You can use the Tech Lab for lectures. We can offer logistical and technical support. We also have an education specialist on our team who can help you integrate technology into your teaching.

  • I want to use the XR headsets, but not the Tech Lab. Is that possible?

We can discuss this. The Oculus Quest II works wirelessly. You can run an existing Oculus app without needing a computer to do so. The HTC VIVE Cosmos is linked to the computer in the Tech Lab and is therefore difficult to move. Please get in touch so we can discuss the possibilities!

  • Can students use XR headsets on their own initiative, outside existing teaching sessions?

Currently, it isn't possible to walk in without an appointment and use the XR headset(s). However, students can use the glasses unaccompanied, if consulted in advance. The education support centre can prepare the appropriate equipment and switch on the XR application. Students can then use the technology during the agreed time slot. Would you like to provide your students with this opportunity? Get in touch to discuss the format. The support centre will take care of the arrangements.
