Pride Library

Research on LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and more) topics has been taboo for many years. The Pride Library contributes to a 'catch-up' in which these topics by making (scientific) literature on LGBTQIA+ subjects more accessible and visible.

Pride Library has societal value, by fostering queer community and encouraging freedom of information and expression; historical value, by archiving queer history and culture; and scientific value as a research tool for accessing information on LGBTQIA+ topics.

Location

You can find the Pride Library in the main building on the 11th floor behind the elevator group in the B wing. This is a group work section of the library, meaning talking, resting and collaborating is encouraged in this space, while of course staying respectful of those around you.

Our Catalogue

You can borrow the books through the University Library's lending system or enjoy them in the space itself. Books can only be borrowed with a membership pass. Students can activate their student card as their membership pass at the Library Service Desk.

Founding the Pride Library

The Pride Library is a collaboration between VU Pride and the University Library. VU Pride wanted to build a catalogue of queer literature, as well as a community and academic space for LGBTQIA+ people at VU Amsterdam. Simultaneously, the university library was developing the concept of having libraries within the library, to both help people highlight more “hidden” topics, and to build these sections into community spaces. Thus the Pride Library collaboration was born. On Purple Friday 2021, our Pride Library was officially opened with a beautiful opening ceremony, which included Writer in Residence and spoken word artist Babs Gons and the (then soon-to-be) Rector Magnificus Jeroen Geurts as well as many of the wonderful VU Pride members.

Pride Library Poetry

The librarian

By Shuai Wang

I’m not a singer or writer

I read papers and books

Over and over

All-day long

If I were a singer or writer

I’d write songs and books

Over and over

Love is the genre

If I were to write you a song

Would you care to sing along?

If I were to write you a book

Would you dare to read it out loud?

Some think I’m a day-dreamer

Oh. Whoever is listening or reading

I hope to find that someone

Who can see the rainbow in this library

Goals of the Pride Library

  • 1. To create a place to learn about LGBTQIA+ topics.

The Pride Library has an extensive collection of informative literature on LGBTQIA+ topics that can be used both academically for scientific research, and personally to educate oneself.

  • 2. To create a place to meet and hang out.

The Pride Library aims to be a community space to meet new people and foster a collaborative and coalition-building environment. The space includes both couches and large group work tables, making it a great space to relax or to meet and work with others. We also regularly hold community events in the library, which everyone is welcome to join.

  • 3. To create a a safe(r) space for LGBTQIA+ people.

Although VU Amsterdam strives to be inclusive throughout, for marginalised people it can be important to have a space specifically dedicated to them. We hope for the Pride Library to create a sense of solidarity, that would make it feel safe(r) for LGBTQIA+ people, and ask that everyone behaves respectfully towards those around them when using the space.
