The department has over 90 academic staff (including PhD students employed by the department) divided into three clusters. In addition, we have twelve professors by special appointment who link the department to research institutions, museums, and government.
Teaching
The department offers both disciplinary and cross-disciplinary bachelor's and master's degrees. Teaching is often in small groups, with freedom to choose different subjects.
Programmes in Ancient Studies, Classics, and Archaeology at the undergraduate and master's levels are offered jointly with the University of Amsterdam under the auspices of the Amsterdam Centre of Ancient Studies and Archaeology (ACASA). Art and Culture provides a dual master’s degree in Curating Art and Cultures together with the University of Amsterdam.
Our Staff
Our staff are specialists in the fields of media, cultural studies, art history, design, architecture, history, classical languages, and archaeology. Chronologically, staff research spans covers the entire run of history, from prehistory to the present. Geographically, our staff specialisations cover all continents, but are united by an attention to the global connections of the processes they study. Cross-disciplinary connections within teaching programmes are a hallmark of our department.
