Tuition Fees
As a rule, we do not charge a tuition fee to PhD students without a scholarship and only to scholarship PhD candidates when their scholarship covers a tuition fee. Moreover, all types of PhD candidates take part in the courses, workshop and modules offered by the GSH free of charge and receive an enrollment at one of the Dutch Research schools to take courses. Self-funded PhD candidates, however, receive a VUnetID, which gives access to the buildings and various services (UB, printing/copying, coffee/tea vending machine), only after their Stop/Go assessment.
There are costs that self-funded PhD candidates must consider, such as the cost of conference or archive visits and the costs of printing the dissertation.
Graduate School of Humanities PhD Fund
PhD candidates (internal as well as external) who have no bench fee or travel expenses in their project budget left, or do not have any bench fee or allocated travel budget at all, can apply for funding to attend conferences and to travel to libraries and research institutes abroad (GSH PhD Fund). For more information, see the application form here.
Please note that requests will be assessed and funding allocated on a “first come, first served” basis. Funding is subsequent to available funds per calendar year. Once funds are depleted no further applications will be granted.
