Within the Faculty of Science, we believe it is important that students are well prepared for the labour market within or outside the academic world. For this reason, study programmes devote attention to this in their programmes. In addition to the activities at study programme level, our students organise their own networking moments and career days through the various study associations. Finally, there are all kinds of VU-wide initiatives that you as a student can join. Your career has already started and on this page you will find what we do for you and what you can do yourself if you are wondering what you want to do after your studies.
During your studies
The curriculum of almost all BA programmes includes subjects that specifically prepare you for your career, whether this is at our faculty to follow a master's degree or whether you will be working directly. Read about it in the study guide of your programme.
All our programmes include guest speakers from the professional field. In this way, you come into contact with possible fields of work in which you can work later on.
Many of our programmes have compulsory internships, fieldwork and other forms of education that bring you into contact with the professional field. If you have any questions about arranging an internship, please contact the internship coordinator of your study programme. Here you can read more about the internship. If you have any questions about following a relevant minor or about the most suitable master's programme, you can make an appointment with your academic advisor. They will be happy to help you make the right choice.
In your free choice you can also go abroad. For this you can best contact the international office. They have an Outgoing Student Exchange Team that is ready to answer all your questions. You can also contact the academic advisor with your questions.
In addition to your studies
It is useful to already ask yourself during your studies what gives you energy and what you are good at. This link will give you access to handy career tests. These tests help you think about who you are and what kind of work suits you. There are many different tests available, such as a personality test, career test and competency test. For tips on writing a good CV and motivation letter, there are special developed clips online. Finally, you can upload your CV at CareerSet and get constructive feedback based on dozens of key criteria that recruiters and employers look for.
Various events are organised within the VU and the faculty, so that you can deepen your knowledge of the professional field after your studies. Check the website of the relevant study associations to see which events appeal to you. There are also annual events that are relevant to every study.
If you have an entrepreneurial nature, VU offers opportunities to potentially start your own business during your studies. Through the demonstrator lab, we offer you support in your first steps towards a successful enterprise.
