Embracing conflict through theatre dialogues
To address societal polarisation, we frequently see the use of participatory methods which focus on reaching consensus. However, this can sometimes lead to insufficient attention to conflicts and differing viewpoints, potentially reinforcing polarisation. The research project 'Theatre Dialogues of Dissent' therefore promotes engaging in uncomfortable conversations, in which conflicts and diverse interests play a central role. Through theatre dialogues, we challenge participants to discuss difficult topics. This creative approach offers an accessible way to explore complex societal issues.
Societal controversies as subjects of discussion
We are organising three theatre dialogues around three societal controversies, in collaboration with science museums:
- The climate crisis and the future of the earth | in collaboration with Sonnenborgh Museum & Observatory
- The future of the Dutch landscape | in collaboration with Naturalis Biodiversity Center
- Climate justice | in collaboration with Museon Omniversum
Collaborative design, execution and learning
Prior to the dialogues, we will engage in conversations with various stakeholders to gain insights into their perspectives on the themes, experiences with conflicting conversations, and the role of science in these. Based on this input, Mens in de Maak designs the theatre dialogues in consultation with the three science museums and the Athena Institute. Mens in de Maak (the alias of Frank Kupper) is a specialist in developing and shaping the theatre dialogue method.
After the theatre dialogues, we will organise a reflection session to discuss the insights gained, determine the next steps, and evaluate how the science museums can better contribute to societal debates in the future.
