Joseph Steele (*1982 New Jersey US) is artist-curator, filmmaker, and PhD Candidate in Critical Media Practices at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

He is currently based in The Hague and is originally from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. His work examines ethnographic modes of re-presentation and instances where artists trouble the archive and interrogate the exhibition space. Joe holds a Master’s from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, 2016. He was also a Fellow at MIT’s OpenDocumentaryLab in 2017 and is a member of AgX Film Collective. Joe has presented research as performative lectures, films and installations, film programs, curatorial projects, and papers in the US, Germany, and the UK. He is currently part of the working group Collecting Otherwise at Het Nieuwe Instituut.

At CLUE+, Joe will continue to work on write-up and revision of his dissertation and also work on an essay film on the topic of his dissertation ARCHIVE POIĒSIS I: “Personal ‘Effects’”, advisor Dr. Reece Auguiste, focused on the practice of artist Renée Green (*1959 US). Through interviews and close reading, he studies how Green uses re-photography combined with her own narrative interventions and how she installs the work in order to anthropologize the exhibition space and to ‘curate the real’ in the complex, multi-modal works. The short film is currently untitled and will include locations in the Netherlands Europe and archival footage, combined with text via narration and intertitles (b/w and color film stills and color HD video, sound. runtime ~00:40:00.)

Joseph will be advised by Prof. Sven Lütticken at CLUE+ and will conduct research at the Van Abbemuseum in Eindhoven, the Volkenkunde Museum in Leiden, and the Art & Project archive at the RKD, Nederlands Instituut voor Kunstgeschiedenis in Den Haag.
