Sports possibilities

Do you like sports? VU Amsterdam invests in the wellbeing and health of its students and staff, especially through Sports Centre VU and the many sports associations.

Sports Centre VU offers a broad range sports activities. It has two locations. The Uilenstede location has the most facilities and has the largest offering of sports. The other location is in the OZW building on campus. Students pay reduced fees to join the Sports Centre. Sports Centre VU collaborates with many sports associations.

You can find more information at www.sportcentrumvu.nl

Sports Centre VU is an ultra-modern and multifunctional sports centre, yet it is social and pleasant at the same time. The Centre strives to provide the very best quality and guidance, at every level. This is possible because of the close connection to science, especially human movement science. The Sports Centre VU offers over 35 different sports, from fitness to yoga and from indoor football to boxing.

Would you like to join a student sports association? Then visit one of the following associations:

SVU Volleyball is the largest student volleyball club in Amsterdam with nine women's and four men's teams active in the NeVoBo competition and various tournaments. The association also organises other activities besides volleyball, including an introduction weekend, a ski holiday, a gala and much more.

SVU Basketball is an association that offers two types of basketball: traditional 5x5 on a full-court or the new trendy 3x3 game on a half-court with modified rules.

SVU TeniSTA is a student tennis club supported by the Sports Centre VU. It combines playing tennis with socialising and meeting new tennis buddies! You can find TeniSTA on the courts at ALTC de Aemstelburgh, just 10 minutes by bike from VU Amsterdam.

  • Sports and society
Sports are important to society, and science can make a valuable contribution to this. That is why VU Amsterdam invests in sports facilities and conducts research into sports and exercise. Take, for instance, the clap skate and the super seat, an innovative rowing bench that aims to improve rowing performance. In addition, research is being conducted into developments related to research on children and exercise, obesity and nutrition. At the same time, the Human Movement Sciences students at VU Amsterdam work on selecting and training athletes. By doing this, we prepare them for events such as the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, an international competition for recumbent cyclists in Nevada. They do this with the aim of breaking speed records. At the Human Performance Lab of VU Amsterdam, top athletes prepare for the expected extreme weather conditions during the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.
  • Top-level sports regulation
Do you play sports at a high level? VU Amsterdam has a special facilities scheme for top-level athletes
