VU Amsterdam is an open institution. Its buildings must be readily accessible to students, staff and visitors. We are very keen to keep it that way. Unfortunately, there will always be people ready to abuse our hospitality. By stealing things, for example. The Security department’s records show that there are approximately two hundred incidents of theft per year.
Do you suspect that there has been a theft or burglary (burglary damage), or have you noticed something out of the ordinary? If so, take these steps:
1. Call Security and/or the VU Amsterdam emergency number
Contact Security on 85854 (internal line) or +31 (0)20 5985854 (external line). In the event of an emergency, call the VU Amsterdam emergency number +31 (0)20 5982222 (external line) or extension 22222 (internal line). You can also go to the reception desk of the building in question. They will then put you in touch with Security.
Please note: if an incident occurs in the Transitorium or the KinderRijk childcare centre, call the reception desk in the Medical Faculty building on +31 (0)20 5985864. If an incident occurs in the BelleVUe building, call the Security Desk in the basement of the Main Building (KC-04) on +31 (0)20 5985854.
2. Fill in a VU Amsterdam report form
Fill in the ‘Security notification’ form that is accessed via the Service portal:
Security will use the information you have entered in the form when recording and investigating the incident. Your report will help them to improve security on campus. In the event that property belonging to VU Amsterdam has been stolen, they will use this data when filing an official report with the police.
3. Burglary damage?
Inform Security. In the event of burglary (burglary damage), Security will ask technical services to carry out any necessary repairs.

- Always keep any valuables in locked cupboards or drawers.
- Do not leave your coat or bag where someone can steal it.
- Ground-floor room? Check your windows.
- Always lock your room, even if you are only stepping out for a moment!
- Don’t forget to close the windows.
