VU lecturer Mathijs Hofmijster on engagement and testing

Last updated on 31 October 2024
Students are more involved in the course when the form of assessment matches the objective, according to teacher Matthijs Hofmijster.

Students rated his course 'training and performance' as good, but teacher Matthijs Hofmijster noticed that they were not very involved with the material - it did not stick. According to him, this was because the exam as a form of assessment did not fit in with the purpose of the course: combining knowledge into usable answers for the sports world. He changed the course and no longer gives exams, but only assignments that the students discuss with each other.

A good example of ensuring better constructive alignment in the course.

Let’s teach differently: No More Exams!
