Working with radiation

Last updated on 7 November 2023
There are certain activities that take place at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, VUmc, BV Cyclotron, and the Academic Centre for Dentistry Amsterdam that involve various radiation sources.

Because of the high number and complexity of these applications, VU Amsterdam and VUmc have a Nuclear Energy Act complex permit. There are also internal regulations on radiation hygiene, relating to working with radiation sources on the VU Amsterdam-VUmc campus.

One of the preconditions for a complex permit is that VU Amsterdam and VUmc have a radiation protection unit (SBE). The SBE is made up of the radiation experts in the VUmc Zorgsupport staff department.

Each organisational unit where work involving radioactive materials or equipment takes place has at least one radiation expert. They are the first point of contact for employees when it comes to radiation hygiene. The SBE gives advice, issues internal permits, periodically monitors radiation work in the departments, and is responsible for contacts with government bodies in relation to radiation protection and the permits.

Users of radiation sources are advised to contact the radiation expert in their organisational unit. They have the best up-to-date information on your local situation. If the radiation expert in your department has any questions, they can contact their own SBE contact person.
