Amsterdam Centre for World Food Studies (ACWFS) and ASI Food, Agriculture & Land Use Research Cluster are pleased to announce an upcoming seminar "From Fields to Waters: How Does Gender Shape Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation in Kenya?", during which PhD candidate Sally Odunga will present her proposed research on the titular subject. The event is open to all and will be followed by discussion and drinks.

Gender differences in climate change perceptions, experiences, and responses remain under-explored in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including Kenya. However, the limited existing evidence indicates that men and women are affected differently by climate-induced impacts on livelihoods and food and nutrition security. In addition, less attention has been given to fishing households compared to farming households despite similar vulnerability to climate change. Additionally, little is known in Kenya about how climate indirectly affects the mental wellbeing of these households through its impacts on livelihoods and food and nutrition security.

While research on adaptation strategies in SSA is growing, most studies focus on initial adoption with limited exploration of adaptation retention and discontinuation. It is against this backdrop that this study aims to explore how men and women in farming and fishing households in Kenya perceive, experience, and respond to climate-induced impacts on their livelihoods, food and nutrition security, and mental wellbeing. Findings from the research are anticipated to inform policymakers in designing policies and interventions that address the distinct needs of men and women in these communities. Additionally, insights will be used for follow-up research on the key barriers and constraints to adopting and retaining effective adaptation strategies and to develop interventions.
