We live in a world full of complex systems, from ecosystems and economies to social networks and the human brain. These systems consist of many parts that continuously respond and adapt to each other. Sometimes we try to simplify integrated systems, such as structuring forests for cheap wood production. This often seems successful at first glance, but disrupts the natural balance over time. This is what Professor of Complex Adaptive Systems Bas Bosma says in his inaugural lecture.
The same happens in the economy, climate policy and organizations: too much control and standardization makes systems vulnerable. Instead, we must learn to deal with sustainability, cherish diversity and leave room for self-organization. Only in this way can we maintain resilient social systems with sufficient social-ecological elasticity. Understanding complex adaptive systems helps us make better choices for the future.
