Balancing Creativity and Commerce: The Dynamics of Creative Ecosystems
Juliet Vink investigated how creative ecosystems function, inspired by the growing collective creation of products and services, such as in techno music. She examined the dynamics between illegal raves, commercial clubs, festivals, and other entities, exploring how they balance artistic expression with societal norms.
Her research reveals that creative ecosystems consist of three layers—underground, middleground, and upperground—each with distinct goals and values. Power, often perceived negatively, plays a constructive role in sustaining and renewing these ecosystems. For instance, during crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a stronger emphasis on collaboration. Vink highlights that internal conflicts within organizations balancing subculture and mainstream are essential for maintaining a dual identity.
