SDG Academy: Integrating Indigenous Perspectives into Research 8 May 2025 16:00 - 17:30

Share
Join us for an online SDG Academy about the critical integration of indigenous perspectives in research!

Integrating indigenous knowledge systems into Western frameworks is essential. Too often, these frameworks overlook the values, relational worldviews, and holistic knowledge of Indigenous communities, leading to initiatives that inadvertently perpetuate extractive and colonial patterns, even in well-intentioned projects like the green energy transition. How do we shift research from being extractive to more collaborative, and how do we move towards more ethical and reciprocal research practices?

Through expert contributions of our guest speakers - Myra Colis and Moné Vasquez - this online SDG Academy delves into the critical integration of indigenous perspectives in research towards more ethical and reciprocal practices. In two talks, we will explore how these elements intertwine to promote a necessary paradigm shift, particularly in fields such as sustainability, climate action, and resource governance.

Myra Colis is an Indigenous Igorot from the Global South with expertise in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and a Master’s in International Technology Law acquired in the Global North. As an advocate for AI ethics and governance, community leader, and founding chairperson of MABIKAs Foundation-The Netherlands, she is dedicated to integrating Indigenous perspectives into movements for decolonisation, regeneration, sustainability, and social impact. Through partnerships, collaborative research, and speaking engagements, she aims to bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern innovations by working with diverse stakeholders, including youth, educational institutions, businesses, policy-makers, and communities.  Most recently, she introduced INAIYAN, a pioneering initiative integrating Indigenous perspectives into AI development and governance.

Moné Vasquez is a PhD candidate whose research examines the impacts of colonialism, and the coloniality of nature and power within Indigenous territories. Their work explores historical and ongoing processes of land grabbing, state-led assimilation policies, and the socio-environmental challenges related to energy transitions, food systems, land and water access. Grounded in participatory and decolonial methodologies, their research involves working with Indigenous communities to center their perspectives, support struggles for self-determination, and challenge dominant narratives. Their work contributes to broader conversations around Indigenous rights, socio-environmental justice, and sustainable futures.
