The third lecture in the ASI lecture series “Waste: inevitable evil, avoidable curse, or precious resource?” is given by Virissa Lenters. The lecture will explore the health risks of chemical and plastic pollution.
Plastic and synthetic chemicals are useful, but they are contaminating our environment, food, homes, and bodies. The Netherlands, with its dense population and intensive agricultural and industrial activities, faces particular challenges with pollution. This talk will explore evidence on human exposure to chemical pollutants and micro- and nanoplastics, their health risks, and approaches to risk assessment. This talk will also address public perceptions of pollution-related risks and disparities in exposure and susceptibility.
The Waste Lecture Series is an initiative of ASI together with Freek Colombijn (Faculty of Social Sciences, Social and Cultural Anthropology, VU Amsterdam). Amsterdam Sustainability Institute provides an inclusive umbrella for sustainability-related research at VU.
