Marja Lamoree and Dick Vethaak in the Volkskrant & The Guardian

24 March 2022
Various media are paying attention to a new study by, among others, the VU and the VUmc, which for the first time shows the presence of microplastics in people's blood.

In 17 of the 22 Dutch volunteers, the scientists found microplastics in their blood. VU analytical chemist Marja Lamoree spoke about this to the Volkskrant and said that there was a good chance that even more volunteers had microplastics in their blood, but that the measuring method was simply not sophisticated enough to pick this up. VU ecotoxicologist Dick Vethaak told The Guardian that the study is the first indication that we have polymer particles in our blood.
