Recognizing differences
Diversity is part of the DNA of VU Amsterdam. We see the value of the differences between people and that is why diversity is one of the spearheads of our strategy. This value will only come to life if we as an employer recognize these differences and take them seriously and pay attention to the unequal opportunities that also exist between people. Rector Magnificus Jeroen Geurts is enthusiastic about the action plan: “I come across the diversity and versatility of VU students and employees every day in my conversations on campus. It is good that this is anchored in our organization with a concrete action plan”.
Working, Recruiting, Appreciating
We strengthen diversity by paying more attention to colorful talent when recruiting and by lowering the barriers that are sometimes present in the application process. Working is about a more inclusive work environment with an eye for inclusive talent development (personal development in your work environment), team diversity and culturally sensitive leadership. We are working on this with, for example, our confidential advisers, but also by better training managers on inclusivity. In addition, we will value cultural diversity when weighing potential talent, in promotions, in awards and generally in giving recognition. As a result, talented employees with a different cultural background can also move on to higher positions. With this action plan, we are working on more opportunities for talent, more role models for our students of color, and broadening perspectives in education, research and policy.
