What do you do at VU and how long do you work there?
I have been working in the Department of Mathematics at VU Amsterdam since 2003. My academic journey began here when I enrolled in the studies of Mathematics and Business Mathematics and Computer Science. From an early age, I had a love for numbers and computers. This passion eventually led me to conduct PhD research, also at VU. So you can really say that VU is my home.
Today, I am a professor of Business Analytics. My role is versatile and challenging: I am not only an academic researcher and lecturer, but also a member of the management team of the Department of Mathematics, with specific responsibility for the Education portfolio. In addition, I fulfil the role of programme director of the master's programme in Business Analytics and am central trustee for staff at the university. This variety of responsibilities makes my work dynamic and extremely satisfying. I can tell you that no two days are the same.
My research is mainly focused on developing new mathematical methods to help organisations improve their performance. This work goes beyond traditional mathematical models; it integrates data analysis, machine learning and artificial intelligence. The goal of my research is to find new, innovative approaches that can help organisations work smarter and more efficiently in an increasingly complex world.
What is the best thing about working at the Faculty of Science?
The enormous freedom we get in different areas is great. This freedom extends from personal development to the organisation and execution of our work. For me, this freedom allows me to pursue my full potential. Moreover, there is a good atmosphere in the department. This positive working environment fosters collaboration, which is essential for both teaching and research.
What really makes my role at VU so special is the opportunity to have a significant impact on both the academic community and society. It is extremely satisfying to see how the concepts and theories we develop in academia are actually applied and make a difference in the real world. In addition, it is a privilege to educate and inspire students. It is a responsibility I take very seriously and it is a source of personal satisfaction.
What could be better at the faculty?
At our faculty, we strive for high quality in research, teaching and support. When I look at the volume and speed of the work we collectively do, we could do with more peace and quiet. More calmness makes for a healthier working environment, which is essential as people are at the heart of our faculty. We need to take care of our staff and students. Rest at work is not only conducive to well-being, but it also opens the door to exciting opportunities such as innovation and making connections between departments and programmes. When people are given space to breathe and reflect, they often come up with the most creative and ground-breaking ideas.
What do you recommend colleagues see, read or listen to during the Christmas holidays?
In the previous question, I stressed the importance of getting more rest. So my advice for the Christmas holidays would be exactly that: take time to relax and unwind. One of the charms of the Christmas holidays is the abundance of fun family films that are broadcast on television. This provides an opportunity to be with your loved ones, enjoying good food and drinks, while enjoying these films together.
What are your plans for the Christmas holidays?
For me, the Christmas holidays mark the end of the year which includes a moment of reflection and looking ahead. Taking a moment to reflect on what we have achieved and what the future may bring. But, above all, I will enjoy the peace and quiet and time with my family. We have plans to make fun trips together, and maybe even go abroad last minute.
To whom are you handing over the baton?
The baton was handed over to me by Maiza Campos Ponce, with whom I followed the Educational Leadership Course. I am happy to hand over the baton to my colleague Margreet Olthof from Health Sciences, who is also active as a trustee.

Are you beta or alpha?

Lift or stairs?
Well, this is maybe a beta answer: it depends. If I have to go up several floors, especially if there are more than a few, I tend to favour the lift. But when it comes to one or two floors, or if I have to go down, I often opt for the stairs.
What is your favourite university snack?
To be honest, I don't really have one. But my daughter, on the other hand, loves coming to VU for the pizza in the main building.
What do you think is the most beautiful VU building?
For me, it's the NU building. What I especially like about it is how spacious it is, with lots of daylight coming in through the large windows. It creates an atmosphere that is both inviting and inspiring. I always enjoy going there to work.
What is your favourite Christmas movie?
That is definitely 'Home Alone'. The mix of humour, adventure and the Christmas atmosphere this film exudes is timeless. It is a classic that never gets boring, no matter how many times I watch it. So yes, 'Home Alone' is my Christmas favourite!
