Dag van de Privacy

When was the last time you Googled yourself?

When was the last time you Googled yourself?

January 28th is European Privacy Day, a day of international attention to personal data and the importance of protecting it properly. Being conscious of this from time to time can protect a lot of your valuable information.

Why don't you Google yourself (or a colleague) today and make yourself and others aware of what can be found online.

To make it easy for you, here are a few additional tips:

  1. Know what can be found about yourself: occasionally check the privacy settings on all your devices and (social media) accounts to make sure you only share the things you want to share. By default, a lot of information is set to 'public'.
  2. Delete apps and accounts you no longer use.
  3. Use a password manager to create strong and unique passwords for all your accounts, this will prevent your data from being stolen.
  4. Be careful about opening links from people you don't know, this could be an attempt to steal your data. Above all, don't just click on suspicious links in emails.
  5. Increasingly, computer viruses are being used to collect private data from you. Make sure it is up-to-date and if your laptop or computer does not have one, put one on, for instance via Surfspot.
  6. As a VU employee, you have the option of using SURF's EduVPN free of charge. This creates a closed and secure network connection over an existing network.
