KIN Researchers Collaborate on the Latest Edition of Amplify Magazine

21 November 2024
Assistant Professor Luckas Falcke (guest editor), Associate Professor Amanda Porter, and PhD candidate Damla Diriker (contributing authors) collaborated with the Amplify magazine team on the issue dedicated to Digital Innovation and Climate Action.

The new edition of Amplify brings together thought-provoking insights at the intersection of digital innovation and climate action from thought leaders in academia, corporates, climate tech scale-ups and unicorns, and think tanks. The magazine features articles exploring the critical role of digital technologies in tackling climate change and the challenges and risks involved.

In one of the articles, researchers from the KIN Center for Digital Innovation, Damla Diriker and Amanda Porter,  in collaboration with Ilse Hellemans from the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), discuss how crowdsourcing can serve as a vehicle for mission-oriented innovation policies (MOIP) to address large, complex societal challenges like climate change.

MOIP involves multiple stakeholders from various sectors, each with distinct interests and priorities. Managing these diverse perspectives while achieving a cohesive mission can be challenging. Collaborative crowdsourcing is presented as a valuable tool for addressing these complexities, helping orchestrators navigate trade-offs across three phases:

Agenda Setting: Balancing intentionality with emerging issues when defining mission goals. A tip for effective implementation is to begin with broad exploration to gather diverse insights, then refine these into sub-challenges.

Solution Development: Transitioning from monodisciplinary to multidisciplinary experimentation, integrating diverse expertise to address systemic challenges. The authors suggest starting with monodisciplinary experiments and gradually incorporating more collaborative, multidisciplinary approaches.

Mission Implementation: Managing the balance between simple, scalable interventions and deeper, more complex systemic issues. A key tip is to use crowdsourcing to adapt strategies in real-time, ensuring immediate actions do not neglect broader, long-term systemic impacts.

For further insights, read the full article in The Twin Transition: Digital Innovation & Climate Action issue of Amplify magazine.

'To stop the consequences of climate change as far as is still possible, completely new solutions and industries would have to come into existence in a very short period of time. I’m interested in how this probably biggest economic change of all times can work out'.
