This podcast series offers a unique reflection on how science and the natural world can come together to contribute to sustainability and better health. Fittingly, the conversations were not only about nature, but were also recorded in the heart of nature itself; along the picturesque shores of the Bosbaan, in the Amsterdamse Bos. The episodes highlight two key themes:
Episode 1: Citizen Science & Biodiversity
The first episode focuses on the role of citizen science in conservation efforts. Athena researchers Marjoleine van der Meij and Baiba Prūse, along with ecologist Sasja Voet, discuss how public participation in scientific research can strengthen biodiversity protection and contribute to broader environmental goals. This episode showcases the importance of engaging citizens in scientific work, not only as participants but as active contributors to meaningful research.
Episode 2: Nature & Health
The second episode explores the relationship between nature and human health, examining how time spent in nature promotes well-being. Athena researcher Kristiaan Kok, researchers Nicole Heise Vigil and Sanne Raap, and Pieter Haasnoot, Manager of Nature, Public & Media at the Amsterdamse Bos, share their insights on the mental and physical benefits of nature, particularly in urban settings. Their conversation emphasises the growing recognition of nature’s role in improving public health and well-being.
