Temporary stop free Open Access publishing Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW)

21 October 2024
Until December 2024, publishing Open Access articles free of charge under the national agreement with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) is no longer possible, as the maximum number of free Open Access publications allowed under this deal has been reached.

The agreement that Universiteiten van Nederland (UNL) has made with LWW on behalf of the Dutch universities, including Vrije Universiteit and Amsterdam UMC - location VUMC, applies to a maximum of 270 Open Access articles per year. When the maximum number of publications is reached, free publishing is no longer possible. During the suspension of the agreement, you have the option to publish either closed access (free of charge) or open access using your own funds. If you choose the open access route, you will be responsible for covering the Article Processing Charge (APC). Please note that there is no central Open Access VU fund available for reimbursement.

Alternative for VU authors: automatically Open Access after 6 months
The VU Open Access policy ensures that the publisher’s version of your work will be made available through the VU Research Portal after an embargo of 6 months. This regulation applies to all authors of Vrije Universiteit (VUmc excluded) on the basis of article 25fa of the Dutch copyright law. Should you wish to exclude your publication from being made Open Access, you can opt-out.

Alternative for Amsterdam UMC, VUmc authors
Authors of the Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc, can share the author accepted manuscript (AAM) version of their article in open access after an embargo of 12 months through the Amsterdam UMC Research Portal. Please send the AAM version of your work to Tristan Coco / Medical Library – AMC (t.d.coco@amsterdamumc.nl)

Demands research funders
If you research funder (f.e. NWO or Horizon Europe) demands you to share your work in Open Access immediately (without embargo), and under an open license, please contact the Open Access team of the University Library.

What about my other articles?
From 1 January 2025, corresponding authors will once again be eligible for APC discounts under the renewed agreement with Lippincott Williams & Wilkins. Researchers who want to stay informed about the status can sign up for the ‘notify-me service’, which also provides updates on other publishers that have a capped number of Open Access publications.

It is expected the maximum number of publications will also be reached for publisher Springer Nature in October, and for publishers Taylor & Francis and Oxford University Press at the end of November.
