VU Researchers win seed money to combat sedentary behaviour

30 May 2024
The Active Achievers is a team of VU scientists who want to stimulate employees to be seated less during their day. They won a tenthousand euros seed grant for their project 'UPstanding University'. It focuses on promoting a more active lifestyle through innovative and competitive strategies.

On 10 June Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam’s third H2LS Diner Pensant Grand Challenge workshop took place, where ten thousand euros were awared to The Active Achievers, a multidisciplinary team dedicated to reducing sedentary behaviour among VU staff. The team’s project, ‘UPstanding University’, focuses on promoting a more active lifestyle through innovative and competitive strategies.

The Active Achievers, comprising experts from Health Sciences, Communication Sciences, Oral Medicine, Biological Psychology, Behavioural and Movement Sciences, Environmental Health & Toxicology, and Pediatric Dentistry, aim to motivate staff to move more and sit less. Their plan includes researching motivational factors, assessing the feasibility of proposed activities, promoting awareness, and launching a competition across departments to encourage participation.

This collaborative effort not only seeks to improve personal well-being but also aims to enhance planetary health by fostering a more active and engaged community at the VU.
