Imagine you witness inappropriate behaviour. Think of for instance bullying, (sexual) harassment, belittling, insulting, discrimination. It can then be quite difficult to say something about it. You may not dare, or you do not want to be the first to say something, or you are afraid that others will think you overreact. Dependency relationships can also make it quite difficult to speak out.
VU Amsterdam is working towards a culture in which employees and students trust that conversations about manners will lead to greater mutual understanding and contribute to a harmonious working or study environment. We encourage each other to discuss incidents with each other at an early stage. This requires not only respect for different views on manners, but also the willingness and skill to engage in uncomfortable or difficult conversations.
The Active Bystander training gives you concrete tools to address behavior that makes you uncomfortable in a respectful and open manner.
How do you counter undesirable behavior? How do you become an active bystander contributing to a culture of respect, equality and tolerance? Find out in the Active Bystander training.
Sign up for this interactive, 1.5 hour training. All VU employees can participate in this training, which is organised several times a year. The first upcoming one is on 20 May at VU Amsterdam (in English). You can find the subsequent dates via the registration link.
