Incubator for jewels
Maiza is also engaged in creatign a community for teachers, as has succeeded with the junior teachers. These junior teachers - or jewels - come together in the Incubator. "This place really gives them a sense of 'community'. Besides, it is a super nice place to work!"
Maiza takes over part of the work of the Academic Director of VU Network for Teaching & Learning1. In addition, she works as an Assistant Professor Infectious Diseases at Health Sciences. She also works at Learn! Academy on the research 'A broader mind' and, as said, at the Incubator. Originally, she is a biologist. After her studies, she worked a lot abroad. After spending time in Spain, Venezuela, Cuba, Belgium and China, she completed her PhD in England.
Making a difference by improving people's health
Her work shows that she enjoys many things. The common denominator: the feeling of making a difference. "Having an impact is most important to me. Doing applied research, for example, so our research can really contribute something to improving people's health. In teaching, I like it when I see that I can inspire our students to engage in infection research or policy. When I see them passing by on the news I get all happy!"
Innovations
Maiza also finds junior teacher coaching inspiring. "I am so proud of how they develop and come up with beautiful innovations. Very nice to see them end up in great places after their time at VU Amsterdam."
