Other Cultures
In 2023, Maurits van Coevorden opted for the English-language track History and International Studies. 'I lived abroad for 3 years and attended an international school. English was not a barrier for me and I think it is important to gain knowledge to get to know people from other cultures; with different perspectives and opinions.'
Small Scale
The choice for VU Amsterdam is partly practical. 'I wanted to continue living at home, because everything is so terribly expensive,' but the Open Day was decisive. 'Everyone was friendly, there were many teachers and it turned out that the programme is not that massive. That really appealed to me. The small scale has real added value. The education is more personal, the teachers are happy to help and there are so many opportunities here.'
Maurits is also a member of the Merlijn study association. 'It's one of the reasons I like it so much here. Socialise and do fun things. For example, we went to Belgrade this year.' He continues: 'An additional advantage is that as a member of Merlijn you get a hefty discount on all your books. That's another reason why so many students become members.'
Favourite Course
The courses European History 1500-1800 and 1800 present were the best courses of the first year. 'In the second year, I can choose a number of courses myself. Transatlantic Connections seems very interesting to me. Among other things, it deals with the revolutions on both sides of the Atlantic.'
Future Job Possibilities
'After my studies, I would like to work for the government, for example at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the European Union. Being involved with other people and other cultures, that seems like a dream job to me.'
