Practical arrangement

Last updated on 16 September 2024
The 2020-2021 practicals scheme offers a good overview of the medicine practicals, which will largely take place 'online' this semester due to Covid-19.

Practical scheme for academic year 2020-2021

In the coming semester, education for the study of medicine will largely be offered 'online' due to the dangers of contamination and spread of COVID-19. As a medical program, we believe that practicals are an important part of the program. That is why a lot has been invested to offer the practicals digitally as well as possible. To help you keep an overview, there is a table with all the practicals of this semester. Complete this table and upload this table to your portfolio.

For detailed information see the Canvas course 'Professional development 1' and 'Professional development 3'.

The practicals are an important and integral part of VUmc-compas 2015. Because the study group principle is the guiding principle for our educational concept, you follow the practicals as much as possible in your study group. In the context of academic professional competences, you are expected to attend all practical meetings and actively participate. In order to meet the requirements of the professional preparation your attendance at all practicals (Course, Professional Development and Internship) is registered.

Practical arrangement

  • Practical Courses and Professional Development

    •  The attendance registration is part of Professional Development and you discuss it with your portfolio coach at the end of the semester (who is your tutor for that semester).
    •  Exchange of participation moment with another student is possible, the procedure is described below (see exchange).
    • It is not possible to make up for missed practicals at a later time.
    • The knowledge and insight gained in the practicals are tested in the course dependent test (CAT).
    • The practical skills acquired in the practicals are tested during the Station Exam (STAT).
  • "Own study group" practicals

    • There are a number of practicals that you only follow in your own study group in the context of confidentiality and continuity, for example Physical Examination, reflection or MCV communication practicals.
    •  Exchange of participation moment with another student is therefore not possible.
    • It is possible to make up for missed practicals at a later time (see registration).
    • Written feedback from your regular practicum teacher is part of your portfolio.
  • Internship practicals

    • The internship practicals, academic skills practical internship, care practical internship and the GP medicine practical internship are part of the relevant internship.
    • If you do not meet the internship practical obligation, you may be denied participation in the internship by the examiner and you will not receive any credits.
    • The attendance registration is part of the internship.
    • In the context of confidentiality and continuity, you follow these practicals in your own study group. It is therefore not possible to exchange a participation moment with another student.
    • It is possible to make up for missed practicals (with the exception of PAV) at a later time (see registration).
  • Requirements for earning credits

Do the same rules apply to digital practicals?
For a digital practical (CPR = computer practical) that is carried out under the direct supervision of a teacher in a practical room at the VU, the same rules apply as for all other practical courses. A digital work form that is done independently and location independently (COO = computer-supported practical) is considered self-study and does not fall under the practical regulation.

I missed one or more 'Course Professional Development' or 'Own study group' practicals, now what?
If you missed one of the other practicals of the Professional Development Course, you can include in your portfolio why this happened. You also explain the relationship between the missed practical and your Professional Development. You discuss this with your portfolio coach at the end of the semester.

To pass a missed 'own study group' practical, you can register on Canvas. Registration is possible after the last regular practical has taken place. If you missed both moments due to special circumstances, please contact the relevant examiner as soon as possible.

I missed one or more 'Internship' practicals, now what?
To make up for a missed 'Internship practical' you can register on Canvas. Registration is possible after the last regular practical has taken place. If you missed both moments due to special circumstances, please contact the relevant examiner as soon as possible.

How are practicals included in the allocation of credits?
The practicals are part of Professional Development, and your presence will be included in your Portfolio as proof. This information, together with the other portfolio documents, forms the basis for the conversation with your portfolio counselor at the end of the semester. It is important that you can motivate the relationship between the missed practical and your Professional Development, otherwise your portfolio may be marked as unsatisfactory. Professional Development is a prerequisite for obtaining the credits for the Physician and Patient courses 1-5. The credits for the Physician and Patient courses are awarded when you have successfully completed the components of this course, i.e. the CAT Physician and Patient, Professional Development and Medical Expert.

Please note: the internship practicals are part of the respective practical internships. Failure to pass / miss an internship placement may mean that you have not fulfilled the obligations of an internship: the consequence can be no allocation of credits.

My Portfolio (PTF test) is signed off as not fulfilled by the portfolio supervisor, what now?
Your portfolio will be forwarded by the portfolio counselor to the Professional Development examiner. The examiner makes an individual decision about the conditions you must meet in order to still receive a pass for Portfolio.

Can I still fulfill the practical obligation by doing a replacement assignment?
No, there are no replacement assignments for practicals.

  • Registration practicals

    • Do I have to register for a practical?
If you participate in a semester for the first time, you will be assigned to a study group and thus automatically assigned to the practicals.
    • I want to catch up on a practical, how can I register?
You register when you have to catch up on a 'Internship practical' or 'Own Study group' practical. Registration is possible on Canvas after the last regular practicum has taken place.
    • Until when can I register for a catch-up practical?
Registration for a missed 'Internship practical' or 'Own Study Group' practical is possible up to two working days before the start of the practical by registering on Canvas. If the registration period deviates, this can be read on CANVAS.
  • Exchange

    • Can I exchange my participation moment?
Exchange of participation moment is allowed. This is not allowed for the 'Internship' and the 'Own Study Group' practicals. There you can register for a catch-up practical on Canvas.
    • How can I exchange my participation moment?
Exchange of participation moment is possible if you actually exchange participation moment with a fellow student. You will be admitted to the practical if you can demonstrate this by means of proof (for example an email exchange in which both students confirm the exchange). Students with an exceptional position have the option of swapping participation without a fellow student.
    • When will I get an exception position?
The students below have the option to swap their participation moment without a fellow student.
      - Students with a top performance scheme from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam
      - Students with a board position at the Medical Faculty Association Vrije Universiteit (MFVU) or Student Council (SR)
    • I have an exceptional position, how can I exchange my participation moment?
Students with an exceptional position can contact the relevant practical leader. You report (with proof) to the practical leader at least one week prior to the start of the practical series with the request to be assigned at a different time.
    • I have an exceptional position and (possibly) miss many practicals?
Contact the study advisors for help with arranging your lab sessions.
