Electives faculty of Religion and Theology

Last updated on 12 March 2024
Students of the Religion and Theology Faculty can choose electives within their own degree programme/faculty, another VU faculty, or another university.

You can put together a package of electives yourself. This is possible within your own field of study at your faculty, another field of study within VU Amsterdam, or at another university at home or abroad (exchange). Keep the levels of the selected courses in mind and make sure there is no overlap between the the courses you've already followed.  To compose a package (30 ECTS) yourself, at least two courses must be of level 300 and a maximum of one course can be of level 100.

If you do put together a package yourself, you always need permission of your own Examination Board.

Overview electives

  • Electives within the faculty of Religion and Theology

You can choose electives from other Bachelor’s degree programmes from the Faculty of Religion and Theology or extra electives within your own study programme.

  • Electives at another Faculty

If you want to follow courses at another faculty within VU Amsterdam, check the VU-website for an overview of subjects and the study guide for possible entry requirements.

  • Electives at another university

Check with the relevant university whether you can participate in the desired elective course and ask that university how to register.

    • Register at the other university as a guest student (via Studielink). For this you need a Proof of Payment of Tuition Fee from VU Amsterdam.
    • When you have passed the course, submit your certified list of marks at the Student Desk. This assessment contains your name, the course code of the component, the assessment and the number of credits.
    • Also provide an English translation of the name of the course for the English diploma supplement.

Ask your own Examination Board in advance if you are allowed to use the courses in your elective space and check the requirements (maximum of one course of level 100 and at least two courses of level 300).
