General information

• Approval and internship supervision

  Always consult your internship coordinator if you are going to do an internship and consult the internship manual for your study programme for the rules and guidelines that apply to your study programme.

  • If you want to do an internship and you think you have found a suitable internship place, you write an internship proposal that you submit to the internship coordinator of your study programme.
  • If the internship proposal is approved, you will be assigned an internship supervisor from the faculty.
  • You are responsible for finding a supervisor within the organization where you will be doing your internship.
  • You develop the internship proposal into an internship work plan.
  • Within ten working days after the start of the internship, the internship contract and internship plan must be approved by your supervisor (often the first examiner), the second examiner and the supervisor from the internship company.
  • The work plan and internship contract are binding for the course of the internship.
  • The Faculty Regulations for Bachelor's internship describe which components you should include in the internship proposal and the internship work plan. In addition, an example of an internship contract that you can use is included in the appendix to the Faculty Bachelor's internship regulations.

• Internship abroad

  Always consult your internship coordinator if you are going to do an internship and consult the internship manual for your study programme for the rules and guidelines that apply to your study programme.

  • If you want to do an internship abroad, make sure that you meet any vaccination and visa requirements and that you observe any negative travel advice. For all students who are going to do an internship abroad, a mandatory online registration via International Travel Policy on the VU-dashboard applies. The student is responsible for doing an internship abroad with sufficient insurance cover and takes out all insurance that is necessary for this.
  • If you are going to do an internship outside the Netherlands, but within Europe (with the exception of Switzerland and Great Britain) at a company, research center or training institute for a minimum of three and a maximum of twelve months, the European Union makes Erasmus grants available. To be eligible for this, the internship may not be at a Dutch institution or organization. An internship agreement must be concluded between the home institution, host institution and you. • Internship report and assessment

  Always consult your internship coordinator if you are going to do an internship and consult the internship manual for your study programme for the rules and guidelines that apply to your study programme.

  • At the end of the internship period, you will write a process report for the study programme and a product or research report for the internship institution and the study programme.
  • The Faculty Regulations for the Bachelor's internship describe which parts the process report and the product or research report must contain. 
  • The first and second examiner assesses the process report and the product or research report according to the assessment criteria described in the internship manual of the study programme.
  • In addition, the first examiner asks the internship supervisor of the internship institution to give his or her view on the assessment of the product or research report.
  • The reports and the internship are rated "Pass" or "Not Pass".

• When and for how long

  Always consult your internship coordinator if you are going to do an internship and consult the internship manual for your study programme (see 'Documents') for the rules and guidelines that apply to your study programme.

  The purpose of an internship is that you gain experience in the professional field and can conduct research in a possible professional situation. You show how you derive knowledge and skills from practice, and you demonstrate your ability to reflect in addition to research.

  • View the internship offer on the FSS Career Platform: login with your VUnet-ID and password
  • An internship can (partly) serve to fill in the 30 ECs elective space that is scheduled in the first semester of the third bachelor year.
  • During the internship, your activities cannot serve as a replacement for the activities of an employee of the internship institution.
  • You can organize your elective space with an internship as follows:

  • In special cases, it is possible to deviate from these instructions, in consultation with your internship coordinator.
  • View the internship manual or contact the internship coordinator of your study program to see how and for how many EC you can fill your elective space with an internship.
