Deregistration

Studielink
Last updated on 10 September 2024
If you graduate or want to discontinue your study at VU Amsterdam, you always deregister via Studielink. You may be entitled to a tuition fee refund.

You can deregister every month from September to May through Studielink. The academic year always ends on 31 August. If you do not re-enrol for the new academic year, you will be automatically deregistered on 31 August. After deregistration, you will receive a confirmation of the deregistration.

More information about deregistration

  • Deregistration due to graduation

If you deregister due to graduation, please state "graduation" as the reason. You will then be deregistered on the first day of the month following your graduation date, even if you do not submit your deregistration request until later in the academic year. For example, if you graduate in December, but you only deregister in Studielink in February, you will be deregistered retroactively as of 1 January.

It is important not to wait too long to deregister, but to do this as soon as possible after you have graduated. Deregistration with retroactive effect is possible until 31 May at the latest, after which your request will no longer be processed. You will then be deregistered automatically as of 31 August (end of the academic year).

Deregistration request on or after 1 June

If you submit the deregistration request on or after 1 June (with a 1 July or 1 August deregistration date), the request will be denied. After this date students are automatically deregistered as of 31 August (end of the academic year).

    Stay enrolled after graduation

Are you graduating before 31 August and not deregistering in Studielink? Then you can still follow individual courses until the end of the academic year (31 August). Contact the educational office of your faculty for more information.

    Please note!

Did you complete your study programme in August, as a result of which your graduation falls retroactively in the previous academic year? And have you not yet deregistered for this study programme in the current academic year in Studielink? In that case, your enrolment will be regarded as a new study programme by our system. You will automatically receive notification that the tuition fees due have been adjusted to the institutional tuition fees. If you still deregister in Studielink after this, the tuition fees will be adjusted automatically.

  • Graduating in August

Did you not receive a graduation email from the Educational Office of your faculty in August? Then please enrol again for the next academic year in Studielink, because without a valid enrolment at VU Amsterdam the graduation cannot be processed.

If your final grade for an exam or thesis was registered before 31 August, you can still graduate in August. As soon as you receive notification from DUO that you will graduate before 1 September, you can cancel your enrolment for the new academic year and you will not have to pay tuition fees for September.

If your graduation date unexpectedly falls in September (for example, because your last grade was registered after 31 August), you can deregister after your graduation has been processed and you will only pay tuition fees for that month.

  • Deregistration due to other reasons

If you deregister for other reasons, please include 'deregistration + the reason for deregistration'. You will then be deregistered on the first day of the month following your deregistration request.

An exception to this is if you submit the deregistration request on or after 1 June (with a deregistration date of 1 July or 1 August). In this case, the request will be rejected. After this date, students are automatically deregistered with effect from 31 August (end of the academic year). No refunds can be made for the months of July and August. For more information, please refer to the heading Refund of tuition fees on this page.

  • Deregistration before 1 February in the first year of the Bachelor's programme

If you deregister during the first year of your Bachelor's programme before 1 February, you will not receive a negative recommendation on continuation of studies (BSA).

  • Access to your VU account

If you have submitted a deregistration request via Studielink due to graduation, you will be deregistered on the last day of the month of in which you graduate. This can be retroactive.

If you submit a deregistration request due to other reason, you will be deregistered from the first day of the month following your deregistration request.

From your deregistration date, your VUnetID will remain active for 90 days and you will retain access to your VUmail, Canvas and other services. Please sure that you download all your relevant documents and emails on time.

  • Student finance, student travel product and (student) insurance

You are responsible for timely terminating your student finance and student travel product when you deregister: this does not happen automatically! Failure to do so may have consequences. Also pay attention to your (student) insurance if you interrupt or discontinue your studies.

  • Refund of tuition fees

If you deregister as a student for a full-time, part-time or dual degree programme, you can in certain cases get a refund of tuition fees.

    • Tuition fees paid in excess for the months in which you are not enrolled will be refunded to you within three weeks. This takes place after you have submitted your deregistration request in Studielink and your deregistration has been processed by us (often at the end of the month). Please note: this only applies if you wish to deregister during the academic year.
    • For every month that you are no longer enrolled, you will be refunded one twelfth of the tuition fees.
    • If you submit the deregistration request on or after 1 June (with the deregistration date 1 July or 1 August), the tuition fees for the months of July and August will not be refunded.
    • Pre-master students are not eligible for a refund because they do not pay tuition fees, but a special pre-master fee.
  • Paid with a Proof of Payment (BBC)?

If you are also enrolled at another educational institution, you will have received a Proof of Payment (BBC) from VU Amsterdam. If this applies to you, you can only be deregistered from VU Amsterdam after we receive Proof of Deregistration from the other institution. This Proof of Deregistration can be handed in at the Student Desk.
