Zoom for studying

Last updated on 3 October 2024
Here you can find how to use Zoom, learn about privacy in Zoom and what to do if Canvas cannot find your (previously created) Zoom account

Use of Zoom

Using Zoom for the first time

Every student of VU and ACTA will receive a fully licensed VU Zoom account when they use Zoom for the first time. A fully licensed VU account means that you are able to set up meetings for up to 300 people without time restrictions.

A licensed account is automatically created for students when they log in via https://vu-live.zoom.us. Please click "Sign in", fill in your VU credentials and you are ready to go.

Or log in in the Zoom Client app via SSO with Company Domain ‘vu-live’ (SSO is just a nerdy way to say login with your VUnet ID). We recommend keeping the Zoom app or Client on your device up to date.

If you don't have a VUnet ID yet, you can still join Zoom meetings as a guest.

Please note further: logging in via SSO is also necessary for other systems such as Canvas or your personal dashboard on vu.nl. If you are not forced to log in, but can directly participate in a meeting, it is likely that you are already logged in via SSO. You can check this by logging in at https://profile.surfconext.nl/my-profile.

Privacy and Zoom

VU Amsterdam considers privacy to be important and therefore handles your personal data with care. In this Privacy Statement we describe what happens to your personal data and how your privacy is safeguarded when you use Zoom with the VU Zoom accounts.

Please read this page with general information about how Zoom can and cannot be used for teaching.

Read the Privacy Statement of Zoom when it is used for online supervision of tests and exams here.

VU Amsterdam recommends you to set Zoom’s cookie settings to the lowest possible. This is how you can do that:

Go to the Zoom website.

If it's your first visit, a banner will appear. Click on "Cookie Settings." Then turn off all settings where it is possible. Finally, click on "Confirm my choices."

If you've visited the website before, scroll all the way down and click "Cookie settings". Then follow the same steps.

Zoom in Canvas

The Zoom integration in Canvas allows you to attend a Zoom session when your teacher has created one. To join a session, simply go to the Zoom button in the course’s menu and click "Join" for the session you want to attend. You will then also be automatically following the aforementioned SSO way to login into Zoom.

Using Zoom with a previous VU account

This information only applies to students who have created a personal Zoom account before using their @vu or @student.vu.nl email address!

If you encounter an error in Canvas that says “User does not exist or does not belong to this account”, then this is because you already have a personal Zoom account tied to your @vu.nl or @student.vu.nl email address. To fix this, you need to migrate to the Zoom EDU account.

Before you do this, check if you have any data in your personal account which you might want keep. If you have a paid Zoom account, please be aware that you will lose access to the features you paid for when you switch to the VU Zoom account.

To switch, please do the following:

Please log in to your account on https://zoom.us/signin (if already logged in, log out first), and you should be prompted with a request to switch.

Check this video for a very easy step-by-step process (based on UvA instructions, a VU version will be created soon): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfdvrXv-RO0.
