For the benefit of VU employees, please refer to the following page for more information.

  • How do I find funding for my research idea?

The grants advisors are ready to advise you on your quest for funding for your research idea. This includes looking for funding opportunities, providing information on specific funding schemes, and checking eligibility and compliance with call requirements. If a specific funding opportunity fits your profile and research idea, they can also advise you in the writing process, do reviews and proof readings, and arrange mock interviews, among other things.

  • Are there additional support initiatives for personal grants?

FSS researchers applying for personal grants like NWO Talent Programme (Veni, Vidi, Vici), NWO Open Competition, and European Research Council (among others Starting, Consolidator, and Advanced grants) can often follow a faculty support programme. The grant advisors of the FSS Research Office organise this in cooperation with the central grants advisors of IXA-GO. The programme includes information meetings, writing workshops, advisory sessions, proposal reviews, and mock interviews. For information and registration,

FSS researchers can contact the Research Office.

  • Who can advise me on developing my research funding application and budget?

The grants advisors are ready to help you out with completing all the necessary steps up to submission of your project proposal. This includes development and approvement of budgets, preparing embedding guarantees and host institution letters, and preparing information for the submission portals.

Once a project idea is granted, our project management advisor, Aysen Şimsek, is happy to help you out with all the steps up to contract and collaboration agreements. She is also the primary point of contact for ongoing projects.

    Budget

It is mandatory to get a budget for every project idea. Project control offers financial advice and draws up budgets for research projects. Budget requests bigger than €25.000 can be sent to projectcontrol.fsw@vu.nl. For projects below €25.000, please contact business control. Always make sure you include the (call) requirements, envisioned start and end date, and the desired personnel appointments in your request. Budgets need to be approved by head of department and managing director in the system, so start with this minimal 3 weeks before the deadline.

  • Are there special considerations for PhD trajectories in my project proposal?

Larger project proposals oftentimes include PhD candidates. If the proposal is granted, the PhD candidates will be included in the Graduate School Social Sciences (GSSS). Therefore, the position of the PhD in your project proposal must follow the GSSS principles.

  • What should I include in the ethics and data management section of my proposal?

Oftentimes, your research proposal must comply with certain ethics and data management principles. Our data steward can advise you on the choices to make. As a starting point, please visit our data management guide.  If you have any questions, please contact our Data & Privacy Steward Emily.

  • What should I include in the impact section of my proposal?

More and more, impact becomes a mandatory and integral part in project proposals. The Research Office and the Institute for Societal Resilience provide advice for addressing and creating impact in an effective manner.

  • What do I do if I successfully receive funding?

Researchers applying for personal grants like NWO Talent Programme (Veni, Vidi, Vici), NWO Open Competition, and European Research Council (among others Starting, Consolidator, and Advanced grants) can often follow a faculty support programme. The grant advisors of the Research Office organise this in cooperation with the central grant's advisors of IXA-GO. The programme exists among other things of information meetings, writing workshops, advisory sessions, proposal reviews, and mock interviews. For information and registration, researchers can contact the Research Office.

  • What is the process if I receive an offer?

If you are requested to make an offer, please get in contact with IXA-GO through your faculty’s Business/ Impact Developer. We will together make use of the template accompanied with the VU General terms and conditions, provided by the legal advisors of the Institutional and Legal Affairs.

For offers and assignments from Dutch ministries, please be aware that oftentimes the General Government Terms and Conditions for Public Service Contracts (ARVODI) apply, which have among other things consequences for the academic freedom, publication and intellectual property rights.

  • What fellowships are there for external international researchers?

The Faculty might act as host institution for international researchers from outside VU. For example through a ERC Marie Sklodowska Curie action. If you want to act as supervisor for (an) international fellow(s), please always contact your head of department and grants advisor first to see if the department supports an application.
