Institute for Societal Resilience (ISR)

Institute for Societal Resilience

The Institute for Societal Resilience is the research institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Increasing social inequality, social unrest, climate change, influence of digital technology on society and public administration, new forms of organised (cyber) crime and a jammed healthcare system: societal challenges are the order of the day. Challenges that are so complex that they require cooperation and the bringing together of different perspectives, knowledges, and insights from different disciplines within practice and science.

VU Amsterdam's Institute for Societal Resilience (ISR) is a response to this need. Established in 2015, the ISR is the research institute of the Faculty of Social Sciences within which researchers, professionals and social partners work together and contribute to finding answers to these complex societal issues.

About the ISR

Societal Impact

With the societal impact of our socio-scientific expertise, we contribute to the reflective capacity and resilience of individuals, organizations, and societies, so that together we can contribute to developments and solutions to complex social issues in society. Our researchers achieve societal impact by developing knowledge and expertise from the principles of reciprocity, co-creation, and social engagement. In an open dialogue with societal partners and peer researchers, we share our socio-scientific knowledge while retrieving new insights from professionals and practices to enrich our research and teaching.

A resilient healthcare system

How can various parties within our healthcare system collaborate to optimize care for patients and care providers?

Bianca Beersma is professor Organization sciences and conducts research into the collaboration and competition in the context of organizations. Mrs. Beersma is theme manager Care and Welfare for the ISR and investigates, among other things, several dilemmas within the healthcare system.
