Build tomorrow’s technology

Having completed the Master’s in Computer Science, you’ll understand and speak the language of computers.

Depending on which track you follow, you’ll have expert knowledge in big data engineering, foundations of computing and concurrency, computer systems and infrastructure, systems for large-scale applications, or software engineering and green IT. You’ll also be able to translate that knowledge creatively, into something that other project team members will understand.

'Software sustainability is the make-or-break factor in developing the systems of the future and reducing the energy footprint of human activities'

Malavolta is active in the field of Data-Driven Software Engineering, with a special interest in mobile applications, large-scale software systems, and robotics. He conducts experiments to better understand phenomena about the quality of software and the way it should be designed and developed.

What can you do after your Master's degree?

Start working

Almost all our graduates embark on careers in areas like consultancy, software, other private-sector businesses or government bodies. Computer scientists are in high demand for a variety of roles, including software-, web- or systems engineer, data warehouse consultant, user interface designer, systems manager, IT project manager, IT consultant, information analyst and policy advisor.

Many alumni now work at companies in the Netherlands or abroad, ranging from small, focused enterprises to the global technology leaders. Others have formed their own startup companies.

Or pursue an academic career

Graduates with excellent grades are encouraged to apply for a PhD position, which can lead to a career in business or research. At VU Amsterdam, these are normally awarded for four years, during which time you are expected to finish your PhD thesis. Some of our recent PhD graduates now work as researchers or engineers at the leading, global technology companies. Others have embarked on academic careers, either at VU Amsterdam or other prestigious universities around the world.
