Understanding the basis of Life

Biomolecules and cells form the basis of all life on earth. In Biomolecular Sciences, we aim at a fundamental understanding of molecules and cells, e.g. on how these building blocks work together to make life possible and on how dysfunction can lead to disease.

The Biomolecular Sciences Minor consist of five courses, with 6 EC each. In the introductory theoretical course, students will gain insight into ongoing research in Cell Biology, learning how pivotal experiments were planned, conducted and their results were interpreted. A parallel course focuses on antibiotic resistance and new discovery, a key global medical issue. In the three subsequent courses students will gain hands-on experience in the laboratory and join on-going research on proteins, metabolomics and (microbial) cells.

  • Experimental Cell Biology I

    We start with a brief repetition of basic Cell Biology and then go ahead

    with in-depth discussion of modern Cell Biology, A central point is the importance of experiments, how is new knowledge obtained? current and emerging topics, and experimental techniques.

  • Antimicrobial Compounds

    The emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens is a major health threat that is often discussed in the media. Yet, the development of new antibiotics with new working mechanisms only decreased over the past decades. Why is the generation of new antimicrobials so difficult? This course aims to offer understanding in the interaction of microbial pathogens with their host and how infections with these pathogens can be treated. The use of antimicrobials as well as the rational of antimicrobial guidelines associated with antibiotic/antimicrobial resistance will be discussed. Furthermore, the emerging problems of antibiotic resistance, the discovery of new antibiotics and the process of bringing these new compounds into the clinic will be covered.

  • From Protein to Cell

    This course focuses on laboratory practicals, including general principles concerning design and carrying out experiments related to protein science.

  • Metabolomics

    This course aims to provide insight into the principles of metabolism in organisms, how metabolomics can be used in practice, how metabolites can be determined in organisms, and how the large amount of data can be handled, processed, visualized and statistically analysed (Big data analysis).

  • Molecular Microbiology

    Obtain in-depth theoretical knowledge of various microbiological topics, including the techniques applied to investigate those topics. This course combines lectures and laboratory practicals.
