How do I apply for a minor? (VU Amsterdam student)

I am a VU Amsterdam student and want to follow a minor at VU Amsterdam.

Would you like to follow a minor at VU Amsterdam? Before you register, first check the minors overview for the admission requirements per minor. Discover the possibilities to fill your elective space in another way!

Make sure that you complete your application for the minor courses on time!
Please consult the general information on registration for courses.

How do you register for a minor? As a VU Amsterdam student you can choose for:

1. Minors approved beforehand

These are both university and faculty minors which are accessible to your study programme. You can find which minors these are in the Study Guide in your programme's OER. These minors an also be selected in the Registration Module. A faculty minor falls within the field of study of your own faculty. Depending on your choice, you can broaden or deepen your knowledge within a different field of study or a specific theme within your faculty. University minors lay outside of the field of study of your faculty which allows you to look beyond the boundaries of your own study programme.

  1. Go to the registration module. Keep the registration deadlines in mind and make sure your enrolment is complete for the relevant year.
  2. Select the minor you would like to follow via the tab: 'minor/specialization'.
  3. Register for the minor courses via the ‘Pre-selected courses’ tab.

Please note! The courses in a minor will be shown per period and are only visible when you have selected a minor. You must register separately for each period in which a minor course is offered.

2. Minors not approved beforehand

These minors are not a part of your study programme. You must seek prior permission from your own programme's Examination Board to follow the minor within your programme as part of your study programme. Do you not have permission? The obtained ECs will not count towards your degree. The Examination Board has a processing time of 30 working days from the moment the request is received. Please keep this in mind and ask permission as early as possible.

  1. Go to the registration module.
  2. Choose ‘register’ and then for the ‘all courses’ tab.
  3. Select ‘search in extracurricular’ and select the corresponding minor courses.
    • If you can not find the courses in ‘search in extracurricular’, it could mean there are additional entry requirements. Please contact the Educational Office of the corresponding course via this form
  4. Here you can register for those courses.

Make sure that you complete your application for the courses on time!
Read more about the registration for courses and exams here.

3. Minors at another university

It is possible to follow a minor at another university. However, in order to do this you have to submit a permission form through the Examination Board of your own study programme.
