Internal safety hotlines

Last updated on 10 November 2023
VU Amsterdam has two safety hotlines where you can report any physically or socially unsafe situation, also after the fact. All reports are treated confidentially.

This page provides information on what you can do if:

  • you are involved in or witness an emergency, accident or near miss on campus.
  • you are dealing with inappropriate conduct or feel unsafe on campus or online.

  • 1. PHYSICAL ACCIDENTS AND INCIDENTS HOTLINE

This hotline is for subsequent internal and confidential reporting of physical accidents and incidents. After initial care and assistance at the accident or incident, it is important to report it internally due to legal obligations and registration.

    • Report physical incident
Attention: reporting a physical incident can only be done through a VU network, and not via 4/5G.
Are you working from home? Make sure you are connected to EduVPN or Azure.

Serious workplace accidents (hospitalisation, permanent injury or death) must be reported to the Netherlands Labour Authority through the unit's director of operations. The operational crisis team and the Health, Safety & Environment department can advise and support. You can find more information on the website of the Netherlands Labour Authority.

  • 2. SOCIAL SAFETY HOTLINE

Do you experience inappropriate behaviour or do you feel unsafe on campus, outside or online? Check the Inappropriate behaviour page to see which resources you can turn to. (This is for confidential internal reporting of non-urgent situations).

It is important that accidents are reported internally due to VU Amsterdam’s legal obligations. If the in-house emergency response team has been involved, the team leader will file a report. Minor accidents and near misses should be reported by employees themselves, or by their manager.

Examples of incidents and accidents:

  • Physical accidents involving injuries or loss of consciousness.
  • Fire on or near campus.
  • The release of hazardous substances into the environment or outside the confines of a laboratory.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances or biological agents (pathogenic bacteria, GMOs).
