If you die, your partner and/or children may be entitled to a benefit from the government, known as ANW (surviving dependants’ benefit). But will they actually receive it? They will only do so if they meet the conditions laid down in the Surviving Dependants Act. If they do not meet these conditions, or only partly do so, they will receive either no benefit or only a reduced amount. This is known as an ANW shortfall.
VU Amsterdam, like other universities, has an agreement with the elipsLife insurance company under favourable terms that enables VU employees to take out insurance that covers the shortfall. However, you should be aware that it may make sense for you not to take out supplementary insurance to cover any ANW shortfall, depending on your personal circumstances. If you do not have a partner, for example, then there is little point in taking out a policy to cover the shortfall.
Employees wishing to take out this insurance cover may do so without answering any health-related questions within one month of their appointment. It is also possible to join at a later date, but you will then be required to answer questions about your health. You should be aware that you will not be able to take out cover if you are incurably ill (see ABP Exception Provisions).
Employees who enter into a relationship with a partner may also take out this insurance and will not be asked to provide medical guarantees if they do so within one month of the start of their relationship (marriage, a cohabitation contract, or living at the same address for at least six months with someone not related by blood or marriage and with whom they share a joint and durable household). Employees in this category who do not take out the cover within one month will first have to answer health-related questions. elipsLife will then assess whether or not you are eligible for cover, possibly for an increased premium or with exclusion clauses.
You should be aware that the policy is not appropriate or necessary for everyone, so please read carefully the information in the brochure on the elipsLife website and seek expert advice if necessary.
