When searching for a WiFi network, your computer or smartphone automatically makes connections to known networks. It does this by shouting in the area: "Hello WiFi network (for example Eduroam), are you there?" Hackers can eavesdrop on this so that they can impersonate the WiFi networks known to your phone. This information can then easily be misused. Set up your devices so that it doesn't automatically connect to a WiFi network.
