Research Centres FSH

Within the research centres, research takes place around specific themes. These themes give a good indication of the research profile of Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities. Researchers from the faculty play an important role in various research centres.
  • Abraham Kuyper Center for Science and the Big Questions
    The Abraham Kuyper Center (AKC) is established in 2013 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The Center aims to stimulate and facilitate the reflection on the big questions that scientific research raises, on a scientific level as well as in the public debate.
  • ACASA
    ACASA is an academic centre with the combined expertise of VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam in the fields of ancient studies, classics and archaeology.
  • ACCESS
    The Amsterdam Centre for Cross-Disciplinary Emotion and Sensory Studies provides a platform for cooperation between scholars from the humanities, the social sciences, and the life sciences.
  • ACCORD
    ACCORD advances the understanding of cultural and religious diversity.
  • Amsterdam Centre for New Testament Studies
    The Centre, founded in September 2007, seeks to foster research in the field of New Testament Studies within the Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanities of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. 
  • Amsterdam Centre for Religion and Peace & Justice Studies
    The Amsterdam Centre for Religion and Peace & Justice Studies is an academic research centre focusing on issues related to peace and justice at the intersection of religion with interdisciplinary and interreligious approaches. 
  • Amsterdam Centre for Religion and Sustainable Development (ACRSD)
    ACRSD seeks a dynamic interaction between scientific disciplines and societal partners on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) through a range of activities. It has an extensive and relevant national and international network.
  • Amsterdam Centre for History and Heritage of Protestantism (ACHHP)
    The Amsterdam Centre for History and Heritage of Protestantism (ACHHP) provides a stimulating and inviting environment for researchers from a variety of academic disciplines conducting research into the history of the various traditions and currents of Protestantism up to around 1800.
  • Amsterdam Gesture Center
    At the Amsterdam Gesture Center, based at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the interplay of audible and visible bodily actions in communicative settings is studied. Spoken language is not only ‘audio’ in nature but can also have visual components – that is: it is multimodal (audio-visual) to varying degrees. 
  • ARTTIS-VU
    ARTTIS-VU (Amsterdam Research on Talk & Text in Institutional Settings, VU Amsterdam), is a group of researchers at the School of Humanities concerned with talk and text in institutional settings were frequently meeting up to discuss their research and hold informal data sessions. 
  • Bernard Lievegoed Research Centre
    In 2017, the Bernard Lievegoed Research Centre was launched, focusing on anthroposophically inspired care provision in intellectual disability and elderly care.
  • Centre for Global English
    The Centre for Global English provides for world-wide access to English education and creates a better understanding and appreciation of the different Englishes spoken in the world.
  • Centrum Èthos, onderwijs, onderzoek en debat over maatschappelijke transformaties
    Èthos provides roundtable discussions, newspaper articles, various events and a master's programme contributing to a better understanding of the cultural dimension in complex social and historical processes.
  • CLTL
    The VU Computational Lexicology (Linguistics) group runs the CLTL: Computational Linguistics and Text Mining Lab, which studies how computers can model language and communication and how this technology can be used for different applications.
  • Centrum voor Buddhism en Dialogue
    The Center for Buddhism and Dialogue focuses on the study of Buddhism as a praxis and an academic discipline. 
  • Centrum voor Contextuele Bibelinterpretatie
    The Centre for Contextual Biblical Interpretation (CCBI) is a partnership between the Protestant Theological University and the School of Religion and Theology of VU Amsterdam. It promotes and organises education, research and outreach activities in the area of Contextual Biblical Interpretation.
  • Centre for Islamic Theology (CIT)
    Centre for Islamic Theology (CIT) has focused on the study of Islam as a praxis and scholarly discipline since its inception in 2005.
  • Centre for Patristic Research
    The inter-academic Centre for Patristic Research (CPO) is an initiative of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the University of Tilburg. 
  • Centre for Religion and Law
    The Centre for Religion and Law is a collaboration between the Faculty of Law and the School of Religion and Theology of VU Amsterdam.
  • Eep Talstra Centre for Bible and Computer
    The Eep Talstra Centre for Bible and Computer (ETCBC) develops and maintains an advanced syntactic database of the Hebrew Bible.
  • Herman Bavinck Center for Reformed and Evangelical Theory (HBCRET) 
    The Herman Bavinck Center for Reformed and Evangelical Theology seeks to study and advance the tradition of Reformed theology that inspired the founders of VU Amsterdam and that still inspires millions of people all over the world today. 
  • Historical Documentation Center for Dutch Protestantism
    This centre collects and manages archives and collections of individuals and institutions from Protestant circles. 
  • Hollenweger Centre 
    The Hollenweger Center for Interdisciplinary Study or Pentecostalism and Charismatic Movements seeks to research Charismatic and Pentecostal Christianity.
  • Language and Hearing Center Amsterdam – LHCA
    The LHCA is a collaboration of staff from the VU and the VUmc doing research in the field of Language and Hearing, in particular on the hearing and speech perception and language development of severely hearing-impaired or deaf children.
  • PAN: Portable Antiquities of the Netherlands

    The HDC Centre for Religious History is the platform for research, education, and valorisation in the field of the history of religion at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
  • Simon Stevin Centre for the History of Science and the Humanities
    The Stevin Centre for History of Science and Humanities is a university-wide collaboration that aims to bring together staff members of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam with an interest in the history of science, the humanities and other academic disciplines.
