The Centre for Global English is based at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and consists of a network connecting researchers, students, teachers and learners of English around the world. Together we study, define, tackle and advise on some of the most pressing linguistic and societal issues that are related to the world-wide use of English:
- misunderstandings arising from the different Englishes that we speak, which may lead to personal/professional loss and socio-political conflict
- accent discrimination
- exclusion through lack of access to English education
The Centre for Global English offers expertise, research projects, teaching and mentoring opportunities, student-assistantships, courses, guided learning, training and workshops in English pronunciation for English speakers (non-native ánd native), students and teachers. We focus on the mutual understanding and perception of English accents whilst cherishing diversity in English. The Centre is founded on its flagship: the online course MOOC English Pronunciation in a Global World.
