1. Responsible and Accountable
We are committed to sharing and applying the knowledge we develop regarding English Pronunciation in a Global World, both at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and elsewhere in the world. We pride ourselves in our work being research-informed and of the highest academic quality.
Following William Labov (1982): “Linguists have an obligation…to use knowledge based on data for the benefit of the community, when it has a need for it”, and “to expose misunderstandings and misinterpretations about language to the attention of the widest possible audience”.
2. Open and accessible
We are accessible and welcome diversity in English, native and non-native accents alike. We believe that in an atmosphere of trust, respect and genuine interest, differences in the Englishes that we speak will generate new linguistic insights and a more profound understanding of one another. We have regard for every individual; each one of us has unique and valuable attributes to contribute.
