Mission of the Centre for Global English

The mission of the centre is to tackle pressing issues that arise from the global use of English.

Goals

  1. To help enhance understanding of our own English accent and the accents of other English speakers. In this way, we ensure that English speakers can manage variation in spoken English better; facilitating communication and preventing misunderstandings.
  2. To help enhance appreciation of the range of English accents that exist in the world. In this way, we combat discrimination on the basis of English accents.
  3. To make English education available to everyone in the world. In this way, we contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals 4 'Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education' and 10 'Reduce inequality within and among countries

The Centre works along four pillars

  • 1. Outreach, inclusion and diversity

We empower by providing access to English education for everyone in the world. We make available an online course MOOC English Pronunciation in a Global World that can be accessed anywhere in the world on any device at any time. The course focusses on the mutual understanding and perception of English accents whilst cherishing diversity in English.

We speak out against injustice that has a base in language.

  • 2. Sustainable education

The online course MOOC English Pronunciation in a Global World provides for sustainable education that can be attended at times of (educational) crises; for example Covid, Afghanistan.

  • 3. Reciprocal learning in academic/professional development

Through our mentor programme, we offer the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience in the online environment of the MOOC 'Lernen durch Lehren'; Martin & Oebel 2007). Following the principle of Community Engagement (Australian Catholic University), we engage in reciprocal learning with our mentors in which we complement and and learn from each other. For example, we develop the content of the MOOC from expert input of our mentors who speak other native languages than we do.

  • 4. Research, collaborations and partnerships

We foster academic potential by providing research opportunities that complement the research that is at the heart of the activities of the Centre.

We grow in collaborative endeavours and pursuits. Because the Centre for Global English looks into English pronunciation at various levels (e.g. inclusive education, language learning, e-learning, understanding, diversity in English, English accents, accent-based discrimination, voice technology), we seek partnerships with academic, public, non-governmental, cultural and private organizations.
