VU community for students

Last updated on 28 October 2024
Are you looking for inspiration during your studies? Or do you need help? The VU community is here for you!

Whether you are struggling with the time and discipline that your studies require, have not yet found your place at VU Amsterdam or are thinking about the meaning of life, in the VU community you will find all kinds of programmes and initiatives that can help you with this.

Studying together makes your studies more fun and can help you with your motivation, processing the material and developing a good study rhythm. If you feel alone and need connection, know that you can go to the VU Campus. For example, there is a coach for your questions on (the meaning of) life and a team of student psychological counsellors is ready to help you if you get stuck mentally or emotionally. You can also commit yourself to society via the Community Service Learning courses that VU Amsterdam offers.

Discover the VU community!

  • Broader Mind Course

At VU Amsterdam you develop a Broader Mind. During your Bachelor's or Master's programme you will be challenged to look at your own discipline, society and yourself from a broader perspective. The Broader Mind Course is an extra-curricular and interdisciplinary course focused on your personal development and involvement in social issues. You will become part of a diverse group of students from all faculties. In this innovative course your perspective on various subjects will be challenged. Follow the Broader Mind Course and help make a difference!

  • Community Service Learning (CSL)

VU Amsterdam offers various Community Service Learning (CSL) courses. Look beyond the lecture hall and make an impact on society by working on real social challenges. You will develop essential skills for your future career and connect with various parties, such as citizen initiatives, local and non-profit organisations or policy makers. Are you ready to take on (part of) this real challenge together?

  • Dialogue, Diversity and Debate (3D)

For Dialogue, Diversity and Debate, you can go to 3D. During the day, this is the dialogue stage of VU Amsterdam. There are meetings about inclusion, diversity and social issues that concern our academic community. In collaboration with the 3D coordinator, students and staff can also suggest topics themselves. In the evenings, you can go there for Life is Better in 3D with various meetings organised for and by students, such as yoga, board games, Open Mic nights, the film club or creative evenings of painting or ceramics. Come by!

  • Diversity Office (DO)

VU Amsterdam is a diversive university. The Diversity Office (DO) uses its knowledge, experience and expertise to utilise the advantages of diversity at VU Amsterdam and to tackle the challenges. The DO has a supporting role within VU Amsterdam and aims to create more awareness about specific diversity themes through an intersectional approach. Will you become a volunteer?

  • Family of Academic Minds (FAM)

The student organisation Family of Academic Minds (FAM) is inclusive and welcomes all students. Together with various partners, FAM organises educational events with the aim of creating awareness about inclusion and diversity in the academic sphere. You can also participate in various recreational events that strengthen the bond between FAM members.

  • Green Office VU (GO VU)

VU Amsterdam takes a leading position as the most sustainable university in the Netherlands. The Green Office VU (GO VU) is the sustainability platform of VU Amsterdam and is led by students. GO VU is an important think-tank and has an advisory role in all sustainability-related decisions at VU Amsterdam. The mission of GO VU is to make a sustainable and substantial impact by exerting influence and collaborating with the VU community and partners. Will you contribute?

  • NEWConnective (NC)

Are you interested in practical philosophy and religion or are you looking for a meaningful conversation? Then NEWConnective (NC) is the place for you! Join one of the many events about life questions, meaning and personal beliefs. This can take various forms: dialogue, journalling, meditations and book clubs. Check out the agenda with upcoming activities and join!

  • Student Wellbeing Point (SWP)

The Student Wellbeing Point (SWP) is the student initiative for and by students where you can go, without an appointment and completely anonymously, with all your well-being-related questions. At the SWP, trained students help their fellow students in an informal setting. Students find a safe space here to get things off their chest, catch their breath or get more information about support options at VU Amsterdam (e.g. the student psychological counsellors). While enjoying a cup of coffee or tea, you can have a helpful conversation with a trained fellow student. Feel free to drop by!

  • VU Pride

VU Pride is the rainbow network of VU Amsterdam for and by LGBTQIA+ students and employees with the aim of creating a safe and inclusive VU Amsterdam organisation and VU Campus. VU Pride wants to generate visibility around sexual and gender diversity and aims for a university full of diversity, in which everyone shows tolerance and understanding for each other. The network organises various events and projects for the LGBTQIA+ community and all interested parties. Be welcome!
