Guidance and support in case of crises

Last updated on 3 July 2024
Crises like natural disasters, or conflict can have a great impact on our VU community, resulting in concerns about the safety and wellbeing of yourself, your family and friends.

As part of our diverse VU community, we understand that you might have deep concerns or emotions about world events and that this might negatively affect your studies or work. Following current developments on natural disasters, international conflict, or political developments around the world could negatively impact the mental wellbeing of yourself, your family and friends. On this page, you will find the various support services we offer to students in case of crises.

VU Amsterdam seeks to offer as much support and assistance, to our students, where possible. Are you  interested in talking about how current events affect your mental wellbeing and how it affects your studies or work? If yes, there are many avenues available to you to seek help, support and advice. Here is a quick list of key contacts you may like to reach out to during your time of need:

In addition to these general support services, during times of need VU Amsterdam offers its students additional support for health, wellbeing, finances and social safety. Check out the options below.

Support within VU Amsterdam

  • Health and wellbeing

    Student Wellbeing Point

You may also like to drop by at the Student Wellbeing Point. This is a student-led initiative for students by students and is located in the main VU building, next to the Student Desk. You can drop by (without an appointment) or use the live chat functionality on their website. studentwellbeingpoint@vu.nl

    3D

3D is the place where the VU community can come together in case of need. During moments of crisis, often student led initiatives and meetings are held at 3D, offering a space for those who want to meet and share their thoughts. You will find 3D on our campus square, on the right corner from Spar supermarket. 3D@vu.nl

    NEWConnective

NEWConnective organises events on personal development, and questions on life, meaning and personal beliefs. The events includes activities around activism, grief, or social anxiety. Throughout the year they organise meditations in the VU’s Silence Room (HG-1A57) and they can get you in contact with a spiritual counsellor if needed. newconnective@vu.nl

  • Financial support

Financial support is available for students who are worried about their financial situation. Think of problems paying tuition fees or rent, or if you do not have access to your bank account. In this case, contact the Student Counsellors for help and advice. Financial problems that cause you to be unable to pay tuition fees can also be discussed at the Tuition fee consultation hour.

Students who find themselves in acute financial difficulty due to a crisis situation can apply to the VU Emergency Fund. There are a number of conditions attached to eligibility.

  • Social safety

If you are dealing with a (socially) unsafe situation, for example due to your origin, you can contact the Social Safety Coordinator via sociale-veiligheid@vu.nl to talk about your situation. This can also be done anonymously. Even if you no longer dare to come to the Campus, you can contact us. Together we will look at which solution is best for you. For more information, please visit the Social Safety Coordinator webpage.
